Jeanne Calment: the longest documented human lifespan. February 21, 1875 - August 4, 1997 [122 years 164 days].
Jeanne Calment is in the Guinness book for the oldest validated human, ever. If anyone has their fountain of youth, it's her. We won't find someone to surpass the duration of her lifespan for years.

Jeanne Calment holding a book with her photo in it, and holding her rap CD which was released on her 121st birthday (so she actually was 120).

The 100-year span:

Photo removed due to incorrect ages on July 16, 2007. Added these 2 though.

A translated quote from Jeanne Calment: "Always keep a smile. I attribute my long life to that."

Every website on the Internet that I have seen, except 1, says she is 40 in that picture, with 1 saying 40-45. However, the official Jeanne Calment book in English says "In her 40s."

This being my favorite picture of them all, shows the 3 stages of the human body: one at 1/3rd old, 2/3rd old, and well, 3/3rd old. So, Jeanne Calment, roughly at age 33%, 66%, and 99% old.

Jeanne Calment with her daughter. This photo I found in a chronology order collection of her photos, after the photo of her in her 40s, leading this photo of her to be in her 50s. We know for a fact this photo cannot be after 1934, as her daughter died at the age of 36 in 1934, where Jeanne Calment was almost 59. If Jeanne Calment was 50, her daughter would be about 27.

Repeated images:

Jeanne Calment at an approximate 30 years duration: 21?, ~55, 80, and 112.

Herman Smith-Johannsen, the oldest man in the world from December 14, 1986, to January 5, 1987, at 111 years 204 days (born June 15, 1875).

After his death, Alphaeus Philemon Cole, born July 12, 1876, became the oldest man in the world, until November 25, 1988, at 112 years 136 days.

Joan Riudavets Moll, the oldest unofficial biker, was the oldest man in the world from September 28, 2003, to his death on March 4, 2004, at 114 years 81 days, or the 6th oldest man ever.

Ernest Pusey, born May 5, 1895, died as the 3rd oldest man in the world on November 19, 2006, at 111 years 198 days.

Ernest had a sister who died at 97 in 1989.

Moses Hardy, the second oldest black man, ever, died on December 7, 2006, at 113 years 335 days, born January 6, 1893.

The oldest humans ever, down to 115. 1.Jeanne Calment (February 21, 1875 - August 4, 1997) [122 years 164 days] 2.Shigechiyo Izumi (June 29, 1865 - February 21, 1986) [120 years 237 days] 3.Sarah Knauss (September 24, 1880 - December 30, 1999) [119 years 97 days] 4.Lucy Hannah (July 16, 1875 - March 21, 1993) [117 years 243 days] 5.Marie-Louise Meileur (August 29, 1880 - April 16, 1998) [117 years 230 days] 6.Maria Capovilla (September 14, 1889 - August 27, 2006) [116 years 347 days] 7.Tane Ikai (January 18, 1879 - July 12, 1995) [116 years 175 days] 8.Elizabeth Bolden (August 15, 1890 - December 11, 2006) [116 years 118 days] 9.Carrie C. What do you notice about all of the 115.0+ year olds? Why, they're all born in the 1800s! What about the ones born in the 1700s?

The oldest people, ever (1700s births, only). 265.Thomas Peters (April 6, 1745 - March 26, 1857) [111 years 354 days] 559.Margaret Ann Neve (May 18, 1792 - Apr. 4, 1903) [110 years 321 days] 759.Geert Boomgaard (September 21, 1788 - February 3, 1899) [110 years 135 days] Anne D'Evergroote (October 18, 1783 - March 14, 1892) [108 years 148 days] Pierre Darcourt (January 23, 1729 - May 11, 1837) [108 years 108 days] Marie-Rosalie Lizotte (December 25, 1738 - March 5, 1847) [108 years 70 days] Marie-Louise Plante (March 10, 1725 - June 14, 1832) [107 years 86 days] Marie Francoise Fleury (October 15, 1750 - April 28, 1857) [106 years 195 days] Marie Anne Colin (March 20, 1743 - July 24, 1849) [106 years 126 days] Sophia Wijnberg (March 12, 1799 - July 11, 1905) [106 years 121 days] Jeanne Hudenot (February 28, 1737 - May 20, 1843) [106 years 81 days] Willem Van Renterghem (December 9, 1792 - October 24, 1888) [105 years 320 days] Elisabeth Vandevraye (November 19, 1784 - November 26, 1889) [105 years 7 days] Marie-Anne Lizotte (July 6, 1731 - January 14, 1835) [103 years 192 days] Michel Eugene-Chevreul (August 31, 1786 - April 9, 1889) [102 years 221 days] David Rennie (February 28, 1755 - March 2, 1857) [102 years 2 days] Marie-Therese Laveau (June 26, 1736 - May 21, 1838) [101 years 329 days] Lady Catherine Shafro (February 10, 1771 - March 19, 1872) [101 years 38 days] Edward Holyoke (August 1, 1728 - March 31, 1829) [100 years 242 days] Marie-Therese Hamel (February 14, 1741 - July 17, 1841) [100 years 153 days]

A 111 year old born in 1745? Thomas Peters was the oldest ever at his time. Living to 111 is much harder in the 1700s¢ï¿½¦due to the lack of Hepatitis shots and etc. But did you notice one marginal difference between the 1700s births and 1800s births? There were a lot more men!

Questions and answers.

What's the shortest term for being the oldest person in the world?

Mitoyo Kawate and Florence Knapp are the 2 that have been the oldest person in the world for the shortest period. Mitoyo Kawate was oldest for only 13 days, while Florence Knapp 15 days (far below average). That was from Halloween 2003 to November 13, 2003, and December 27, 1987, to January 11, 1988.

In January 2007, that record was broken by Emma Tillman, for being the oldest person in the world for 4 days.

What's the closest age difference between a previous oldest person in the world, and the next oldest person in the world?

The question could also be arranged to the closest age difference between the 1st and 2nd oldest person in the world when the 1st oldest dies. The easy answer to that is 2 days. On February 2, 1987, when Mary McKinney of California died, at 113 years and 248 days, the next oldest person in the world, Anna Eliza Williams of England, was only 2 days younger.

However, the second oldest person in the world at the start of Elizabeth Alice Kensley's reign, and for the first 63 days, was only a day younger (Kiet Portier-Tan).

What's the farthest age difference between the oldest and 2nd oldest person in the world?

This was probably on February 21, 1986. As we know, the average oldest person in the world was 113 in the 1980s, and on the occasion where the oldest person in the world was 112 years and 11 months old at 12:16 GMT on February 21, 1986, she preceded the death of the 120.64 year old man, making the age difference of 7.72 years.

How old is the oldest person not to become the oldest person in the world?

117 years and 248 days, the day Lucy Hannah died in 1993 (oldest was 118 at the time). She is ultimately, the oldest, 2nd oldest person in the world, ever.

What year is home to the most oldest persons in the world by births?

1873. 1873 has the record for 4 oldest persons in the world. 1873, March 22 Mamie Eva Keith to September 20, 1986. [113 years 182 day]
1873, May 30 Mary McKinney to February 2, 1987. [113 year 249 day]
1873, June 2 Anna Eliza Williams to December 27, 1987. [114 year 208 day]
1873, October 10 Florence Knapp to January 11, 1988. [114 year 93 day]

The next is a tie of 3 in the years 1889, 1863, and 1855.

What's the average age at which one becomes the oldest person in the world?

The average modern-day age of becoming the oldest person in the world is 114. That apparently is the 'mode' of becoming the oldest person in the world.

While the average oldest person in the world, like Marie Brmont of 2001 and Maud Farris-Luse at 2002, die at 115, but became oldest at 114, it is seemingly a probability that other oldest persons in the world, like Kamato Hongo of 2003 and Maria Capovilla of 2006, die at 116, but still became the oldest person in the world at 114, as opposed to the oldest persons in the world like Eva Morris of 2000 and Mitoyo Kawate of 2003, die at 114, but also became the oldest person in the world at 114. Therefore, the previous 7 oldest person in the world, regardless of what age they lived to, became the oldest at 114.

Does one need substantially good eye vision to live a long life?

Nope, one certainly does not. True, many of the oldest people, such as the 122 year old Jeanne Calment or the 116 year old Maria Capovilla, never wore glasses. But some of them did.

A photo of Sarah Knauss at age 119 and 100 showed her wearing glasses, however, a photo of her at age 17 did not. The oldest person in the world, Maud-Farris Luse, didn't wear glasses at 115 but she did at 100. The oldest person in the world, Marie-Louise Meilleur, didn't wear glasses at 117, but a photo of her at 95 showed she did. Someone who wore glasses all their life, however, was Alpaheus Philemon Cole, the oldest man in the world in 1988, who wore glasses at age 112 and in his 40s.

Is the oldest person in the world (man and woman), married? Or have kids?

It seems that all of them are married. Do all have kids? No. Elizabeth Bolden and previous Maria Capovilla, and 119 year old Sarah Knauss of 1999 and 117 year old Marie-Louise Meilleur of 1998 were flooded with kids, grandkids, great grandkids, etc.

However, 115 year old Marie Brmont of 2001, never had kids. Charlotte Benkner 114, who was awarded a Guinness record in 2004 for the oldest person in the world, claims she always liked children but didn't have kids. Neither did Hendrike van Andel-Schipper 115 of 2005, who won a Guinness award too.

As for the oldest man in the world, Antonio Todde of 2002 was married, so was Joan Riudavets Moll 114 of 2004 and Fred Hale 113 of 2004. But, the next oldest man in the world, Emiliano Mercado del Toro, (which is 1 thing I like about him) never married nor had any kids. Hmm, maybe he's a virgin? Imagine that, a 115 year-old virgin.

One thing unique about Marie Brmont, 115 years, was she lived so long that she had 2 consecutive husbands. She was born in 1886, first married in 1910 at the age of 24. Her 1st husband died in World War I, and, some 20 years later, married her 2nd husband, a taxi driver, in 1936, at the age of 50. 31 years later her 2nd husband dies in 1967 while she was 81, and that has been her last husband since. She says she has been happy with her 2 husbands and her life though they are all dead now..

The next oldest person in the world, Maud Farris-Luse, also had 2 husbands. She first married in a farmer in 1903, and he died in 1951 and she married again, and he died 3 years later. Marie-Louise Meilleur, 117, also had 2 husbands.

The oldest person in the world (after August 27, 2006), Julie Winnefred Bertrand, never had kids and never married. This makes at that time the current 1st and 2nd oldest person in the world both unmarried and never had kids (oldest man and oldest woman in world).

Is there a race that dominates to being the oldest person in the world?

No, there is no superior race, but, by geography, or country. There are countries whom dominate to having the most centenarians and supercentenarians. There's the Okinawan Islands of Japan, Sardinia, Italy, some colder regions in Canada, and parts of California specifically researched for having a large amount of centenarians.

Now, the countries that have the most oldest persons in the world, are the ones that have an early and substantial birth certificate system. The Netherlands is one of the oldest earliest countries to start, therefore, a huge percent of supercentenarians from the 1700s are from The Netherlands, but the percentage for those born in the late 1800s are small now because the small country couldn't possibly compete with large countries such as the United States and France. Germany also had an early birth certificate system, but the government has strict laws about giving them out so the only ones, with exceptions, of the oldest people from Germany are the ones that immigrated to the U.S. Japan is also the earliest Asian country to have a birth certificate system, beginning after their revolution in 1868.

China and India don't have that, therefore, the oldest validated oldest person in the world is never from China or India, the 2 most populated country in the world. And it is predicted that there are supercentenarians from China or India, but it's a shame they can't prove their age. The oldest person claimant in China right now is Du Pinhua, a claimed 120. For India, there's Habib Mayan, a claimed 136.

How young is the youngest oldest person in the world?

How young can the oldest person in the world be? Such an answer by an individual is the day a youngest-oldest person in the world became the oldest person in the world, not the age at which they die, but I suppose I could answer both.

The youngest oldest person in the world throughout 2004 and 2005 was thought to be John Mosely Turner of 1968, but that is clearly no longer the case. He lived to 111, but the age at which he became the oldest person in the world was disputed.

If you looked at Louis Epstein's table of the oldest people, he discriminated against a select group of people: people below 110. His tables are apparently used by the Gerontology Research Group. Therefore, any person looking at either of the tables in 2002 and beyond would see 2 such gaps of the oldest persons in the world:

James Henry Brett, Jr. (July 25, 1849 - February 10, 1961) [111 year 200 day]
John Mosely Turner (June 15, 1856 - March 21, 1968) [111 year 280 day]

By looking closely, one could see the oldest person in the world was 111 in 1961, and 111 in 1968. But¢ï¿½¦what about in between? What about 1962? After James Henry Brett died in 1961, John Mosely Turner was only 104. Surely 104 is too young to be the oldest person in the world? There must be people in between!

And the answer is yes, the missing people didn't live to 110, they lived to under 110, which is why some of the people weren't published in other tables, because they weren't supercentenarians. This wasn't the case for the Guinness Book of World Records 2005 edition, but as of 2006, more cases have been confirmed.

In the Guinness Book of World Records 2005, we could see that they listed only 2 people in between, Lovissa Svensson (107 to 109), and Kiet Portier-Tan (107 to 107). Therefore, as of 2005, the youngest oldest person in the world since 1955 was the day John Mosely Turner became the oldest person in the world at 106 years and 310 days rather than 104, but in 2006, he lost the title of the youngest oldest person in the world (which doesn't exist). In 2006, 3 more oldest-person-in-the-world cases have been verified, including another 2nd oldest person in the world. With the documentation of Margarethe Zinndorf (107), Auguste Pahl (109), and Hannah Smith (110), John Mosely Turner is now believed to be the oldest person in the world from the age of 109 years and 209 days. Fortunately, no one lost their title of the oldest anyways, except for the 109 year old James Hull.

But you probably didn't care to know who the youngest oldest person in the world since 1955 is, as opposed to pre-historic times. In truth, the oldest person in the world is as young as 107 since 1955, and 103, since 1900. There are several gaps starting from 1900 where the oldest person in the world may seemingly be ¢ï¿½ï¿½103.' But at those days, research of earlier claims are limited, thus making the oldest persons in the world very wide gap.

And what about when the oldest person in the world dies? How young can they be?

The youngest oldest person in the world at death.

Since 2000, Emma Tillman when she died at 114 years 67 days (January 28, 2007).
Since 1950, Lovisa Svensson, 109 years 89 days (February 17, 1963).
Since 1900, Sophie Lacomte, 105 years 325 days (April 2, 1910).
Since 1850, Willem Van Renterghem, 105 years 320 days (October 24, 1888).

What's the longest time anyone has outlived their parent?

The unofficial record goes to the oldest man in the world, Joan Riudavets Moll, in 2004. He was born on December 15, 1889. His mother died in December 1889. This makes him the longest time anyone has survived their parent: 114 years.

Who's the oldest person with the earliest-born parent?

That goes to the second oldest man in the world (November 19, 2004 - December 7, 2006). Moses Hardy, African American, was born on January 6, 1893. His mother was born in 1853 (39 years older). His dad was born in 1820 (73 years older).

So a father born in 1820 fathers a son in 1893 at the age of 73 and the son lives to be the second oldest man in the world as of 2005 and 2006. I bet none of you living people have a parent born as early as 1820. ;P

Could someone who was born on January 1, 1900, expect to be the oldest person in the world by January 1, 2000?

No, that's a stupid question, in fact, that person could expect to be the 450,000th oldest person in the world or so. Such a person wouldn't even have a shot on January 1, 2010. Click here to see a list of the oldest persons in the world on January 1, 2000.

Could someone born on January 1, 1800, expect to be the oldest person in the world by January 1, 1900?

Also no, because we know there are people born in the 1700s that have died in the 1900s, however, there seems to be reasonable evidence that such a rank is only a 1 digit number. The problem with that, is, knowing who the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th oldest person in the world at the time is incredibly lacking. Take

Could someone born on January 1, 1700, expect to be the oldest person in the world by January 1, 1800?

This is a good question, and I wish I had a good answer to that. While I seem to have a good answer as to who the oldest person in the world in 1798 is, for 1800, it is lacking. Then, there's the belief that the oldest person in the world at those times are never 99 or under, so the answer is probably no, just that there may not be a verified person with substantiation proof of being alive in that year.

What's the most amount of days in a row in which a supercentenarian was born?

The record is 3 consecutive days, with the first one happening in 1872. The dates were March 22, March 23, and March 24.

First set of triple supercentenarians = March 22, 23, and 24, 1872, followed by February 10, 11, and 12, 1889, and March 1, 2, an 3, 1889.

What's the most amount of supercentenarians born on the same day?

The record is still a tie between several days of 3. The first was April 1, 1887, in which 3 supercentenarians were born that day, followed by September 12, 1889, and March 9, 1895.

What year has the most amount of supercentenarians by birth?

The answer is best explained by a table listing the number of verified and validated supercentenarians by year. As of February 28, 2007:

1896: 56
1895: 60
1894: 63

Did anyone from the 1820s make it to the 1940s?

Not even close. That marks the end of it all. This makes James Henry Brett, Jr. the first human to live to their 12th decade.

When did the number of living people born in the 2000s surpass the number of living people born in the 1800s?

Could someone be not that skinny and still live a substantially long life?

More than likely, not. Overweight people almost have no chance of living to 100 or 110. But that's out of the question, we're talking about less-skinny people. It's been known that less-muscular men live longer than muscular-men (as far as 110.0+ year olds are concerned). Also, incredible tall people don't tend to live as long as the average-height people. The 120 year-old man, Shigechiyo Izumi, was only 4'8" and 94 pounds. Then again, he must have been taller and heavier 40 years ago at age 80. Likely that the longer you live the more time you have to shrink. According to the IMDM profile of the 122 year old Jeanne Calment (because she was an actress), her height was 4'11". And since she made a movie at the age of 114, I assume that was her height at 114.

But how heavy can girls be? It wasn't until a 2006 article on Julie Winnifred Bertrand's 115th birthday did it mention (she looks big), that she was 150 pounds at 5'8" when she was young. This makes her living proof that a 150 woman at 5'8" can live to 115.

Why do women live longer than men?

Females express both more Mn-SOD and more glutathione peroxidase antioxidant enzymes than males, and this has been suggested to be the reason females live longer than males in mammalian species.

How long is the longest time for anyone to live in a nursing home?

Well, it's pretty obvious that the longer you live, the later you will move to a nursing/retirement home. Hendrikje van Andel-Schipper, ~<115, moved to a retirement home at 105. Marie Brmont, the oldest person in the world, 115, moved to a retirement home at the age of 106. Eva Morris, the oldest person in the world, 114.98, moved to a retirement home at the age of 107. The 122 year old Jeanne Calment moved to a retirement home shortly before turning 110, spending 12 and a half years there. Sarah Knauss, 119, moved in at 110.

Then, there are people who are goofy, like Grace Clawson, who moved to a retirement home at age '80.' This was in 1968. She lived to become the oldest person in the United States.. Having lived to 2002 at 114, spanning 34 years at her nursing home. It should be noted that there are records of Anitica Butariu of Romania moving into a nursing home at age 82, and she lived to 115, spanning 33 years.

For men, currently Walter Breuning, (born September 21, 1896), has been living in his retirement home in Montana for the last 27 years.

Do any of the oldest persons of the world have had any young husbands? (Or wives?).

Yea, wouldn't we all like to see a 120 year old man with an 80 year old woman (or the older way around). Unfortunately, none of the oldest woman of the world had any marginally young 2nd or 3rd husbands. Matter fact, I don't think any of them married a man younger than them.

Fannie Adler Greenberg (who's born May 24, 1895), did have a husband, but at the occasion of her 111th birthday, she had a 95 year old boyfriend, who gave her a kiss on her cheek after she blew out the candles.

Any oldest longest marriages?

Yes, Charlotte Hughes, the record holder for the United Kingdom, married a 63 year-old man at 63, both retired, and married for 40 years until he died when they were 103.

Mr. Berend Gengler (February 10, 1892 - October 6, 2000), was born and died in the same house, in a small village, Tweede Exlo«rmond, of the Netherlands.

How old is the oldest child at the death of their parent?

The 2nd oldest woman ever, Sarah Knauss, 119, had a daughter who died at 101. When Sarah Knauss died, her daughter, Kathryn Sullivan, born November 17, 1903, holds the 2nd oldest child ever at 96 years 43 days.

The daughter of Susanna Lynn (1888-2001), died when she was 96 in 1997.

What's the oldest mother-daughter age combinations?

Record discovered in mid-2006, is a 112 years 17 days old mother (Mary Cota, 1870-1982), and her daughter Rosabell Fenstermaker, 111 years 344 days (1893-2005) = almost 224 years.

Grace Thaxtons 114 + her mother that lived to be 109 (August 1860 - December 1969) = 223 years.

Sarah Knauss 119 + her daughter that lived to 101 = 221 years.

Mary Cota, in 1889.

The daughters of Mary Phil Cota:

Ruth Wilder (83), died May 12, 1982.
Edna Sowards Baker (99), died November 28, 1991.
Edith Keasler (100), died October 12, 1995.
Marjorie Marie Richardson Pruitt (102), died December 26, 2004.
Rosabell Fenstermaker (111 years 344 days), died October 14, 2005.

None of her daughters lived to (their) mother's age. She had 4 sons, though, and none of them past 90.

I'm interested in becoming the oldest person in the world someday. Where can I apply the application forms?

Sure, send an e-mail to Guinness, with a picture of your birth certificate. Tell them you're interested in breaking Jeanne Calment's record of 122.45 years. You can also send an additional e-mail to RobertDouglasYoung@Yahoo.com and SColes@GRG.org, citing your age and what year or age you think you could live to be.

Can I submit my grandma to be the oldest person in the world?

We certainly are looking for older people. Anyone that is 111 in 1973, or 110 in 1965, or 1963, or 109 in 1950, or 106 in 1939, or 1933, or 103 in 1937, or 105 in 1918, ¢ï¿½¦or 111 in 1903 or 1899, or 112 in 1857, or 109 in 1847, or 1837, etc. have quite a good chance of winning an award. Now, you most likely didn't have an old relative that was older than the above, now did you?
